The Waterproof Bible
All the best (and in fact worst) authors pass through Paris. Today’s culture guest was in the first group. Andrew Kaufman. He’s Canadian and backs up my theory that Canadians are the nicest nationality. Just like his books he’s short, sweet and smiley and a delight to interview. His first book came out a few years ago and was a cult bestseller. If you haven’t read ‘All My Friends are Superheroes’ put it on your to-do-list – it’s only about 100 pages and is well worth it. It’s charming, witty and weird and also a bit cynical in places – keeping it real. It's a fun love story between a normal man, Tom and a superheroine, The Perfectionist. We’re also introduced to the likes of the Stress Bunny, the Couch Surfer, the Dancer, the Sloth and the Chip. Everything is fine with the Perfectionist until their wedding day when her ex-boyfriend, malicious superhero Hypno, hypnotised her into believing her new husband is invisible. The story is about Tom trying to make her see him. I read somewhere that this book is ‘to read if you're in love and especially if you long to be so' – let’s face it that’s basically all of us. Today on air Andrew Kaufman told me he’s a real romantic – but the book isn’t written in the soppy sense of the word.
His new book is called 'The Waterproof Bible' – another wonderfully metaphorical book suffused with totems, religions, floods and sudden blindness. What it all means is entirely up to the reader and most of the outlandish events that occur are left unexplained. All that’s left to say is that after meeting Andrew Kaufman I did feel a bit jealous of the way he sees the world. I won’t give too much away – watch the culture show to find out more.
