1973 - Bye Bye Cellphone
First came Air, then there was Daft Punk and then Phoenix. Now the Paris suburb of Versailles has spawned another band with a slightly different sound to their predecessors. 1973 are a trio that have broken away from the electric sounds of synth heavy pop we’ve all got used to here in Paris. Instead their debut album 'Bye Bye Cellphone' has a sound of American pop from times gone by. The melodies sung by Nicolas Frank are helped along by Thibaut Barbillon and Jérôme Plasseraud. They conjure up memories of The Beach Boys and The Beatles with one or two instruments I’ve never even seen or heard of before. Frank may have introduced himself as 'the charismatic frontman' but in fact he's actually pretty shy and the band are quite sweet. I saw them at the Batofar – a fabulous Ghetto cool static boat venue on the Seine – your next chance is at the Bataclan in Paris on 29th November.
