Is the world's long love affair with French cuisine over? French chefs were once the greatest. But in his book 'Au Revoir to All That: Food, Wine and the End of France' Michael Steinberger looks at how Paris' supremacy has been challenged by Spain, Tokyo and even London, which in 2005 was named the best food city in the world by Gourmet magazine. The Luxembourg gardens at twilight, with a bottle of wine, a piece of cheese and a baguette.

I always love visiting Willi’s wine bar – terrific choices and a wonderful atmosphere.
What would your last meal be?
The sausage pizza from Pepe’s Pizza in New Haven, Connecticut.
Most memorable meal?
The meals ive had at Louis XV in Monaco stand out in my memory. Franck Cerruti, the chef there, is just brilliant.

What’s your guilt eating pleasure?
Pepperidge’s Farm Goldfish crackers – they are absolutely addictive.
